Miss S.C. Holland
Castle Veterinary Surgery
1 Tilehurst Road,  Reading,  Berkshire RG1

Recommended by: Lori Wyndham Jolly  (dyfferent@hotmail.com)
Date of recommendation: Wed Jun 27 2001
Number and type of animals treated there: My six rats
Saw this vet for how long: Four visits so far
Comments: I'm impressed with this woman. The other member of the practice is book-familiar with rats, but Dr. Holland knew a lot more, was more comfortable handling them, and gave me advice which heretofore I had only read on this website. She knew about sarcoptes mites in rats, she knew about pine bedding being bad, and she treated my rats kindly and lovingly. I trust her with my boys! She is the first vet in the UK I can say this about.

Comments: St. Frances Veterinary Surgery is brilliant. They charge about £2.50 for teeth and nail clipping and are friendly and informative. They are also part of anicare, so help can be sought day and night. They do not charge you £15 just for coming through the door like some vets!

Comments: Very glad I found this vet,I find him easy to talk to & he listens to you & takes your opinions on board. I'm constantly there with my rats chest problems,it's a wonder the poor man hasn't thrown me out yet or had me banned! Keep up the good work Rob.

Comments: I go to this surgery because it was recommended by a friend who keeps about 200 gerbils & a similar number of mice. She has been going there for about 6 years, although I've only been for a few months. Jackie (the gerbil lady) sees either Mr Treherne or Miss Pitt-Bailey; I have only seen Mr Treherne. He used to keep pet rats, and is very confident with them. He regularly operates on rats, mice and gerbils; last week he removed a tumour from one of my mice, castrated a friend's rat, and performed a caesarean & hysterectomy on Jackie's mouse.

The surgery uses Isoflourane anaesthetic on small animals. their prices are VERY reasonable, eg £5 inspection fee for a mouse, £7.50 for a rat, and medication is often included in this. Tumour removal on mouse cost £23, rat neutering cost £30.

Number and type of animals treated there: 2 rats
Saw this vet for how long: 6-7 months
Comments: Graham is a really good vet; likes rats, is very keen to learn more about caring for them (e.g. when I took the RMCA drug chart in he was more than happy to use it & asked to keep it for future reference), & pretty knowledgeable already. He's also really good about listening to you & explaining what & why he's doing, and follows up carefully as well.

Number and type of animals treated there: I have taken all 10 of my rats there for checkups and they have treated at least 5 of them.
Saw this vet for how long: I have been going to this vets for 8 months - probably over 20 visits..
Comments: This vet's practice is very rat friendly - one of the nurses has rats as well as the receptionist's children. Even the locum they use from time to time once had a pet rat. Both vets are very gentle and caring with my rats. Mr Speak specialises in surgery and has sucessfully removed 2 tumors from one of my rats. Mrs Jeffreys has a post grad certificate in radiography and has sucessfully x-rays one of my rats. Both vets will explain any diagnosis and treatment and are open to discussion about options that I put forward with regard to treatment. If they don't feel they have the expertise in an area they are more than willing to learn. They use Isoflourane anaesthetic for surgery and prices are reasonable.
